Japan to Invest in More ‘Made in Cambodia’ Products

PHNOM PENH: As Japan has already invested in Cambodia in the textile and agricultural sectors, the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry wants to expand its investment in the textile sector in Cambodia in the form of OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturing). Their additional investment will result in even more clothing sporting a “Made in Cambodia” tag.

On February 1, Chairman of the Mekong-Japan Business Cooperation Committee, Yoshihisa Suzuki, met with Prime Minister Hun Manet at the Peace Palace. He informed the PM about the achievements of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is the largest economic and commercial institution in Japan. It currently has 515 branches and more than 1.25 million members focusing on textiles, machinery and metals, energy, chemicals, food, housing, information technology and finance.

Mr. Suzuki emphasized the existing investment activities in Cambodia in the textile, gas supply and agriculture sectors, and said his visit is to explore economic development and investment opportunities in Cambodia. He also expressed interest in expanding investment in the textile sector in the form of OEMs on textile materials, indicating that products are made in Cambodia.

He also informed the PM that the Mekong-Japan Business Cooperation Committee is responsible for collecting information, conducting surveys and research on the investment climate and doing business in Mekong countries, including Cambodia.

In response, the PM praised the achievements of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce in Cambodia. He also welcomed further investment activities. He highlighted the attractiveness of new investment laws and incentive policies for investors and businesses to enter a more favourable and flexible investment environment.

The PM hoped Mr. Suzuki’s visit with his delegation will increase the possibilities and expand the potential of further investment in Cambodia with confidence and realism. He said that the Royal Government is always ready to coordinate and cooperate with Japanese investors in order to turn Cambodia into a major investment destination and a regional hub.
